Worry is spreading as the Omicron variant has been confirmed in the U.S. While much is still unknown about this variant, which was identified in South Africa in late November of 2021, the same tactics to protect yourself from getting it will work just as well.
Currently, the latest variant has presented mild symptoms in those that have been infected. However, no one wants to be ill for any reason or spread COVID around. The CDC has recommendations in place to help you stay protected from the Omicron variant that you can follow to reduce your chances of getting it.
CDC Omicron Variant Prevention Strategies to Follow
The CDC still encourages the same well-established COVID protection protocols to keep you safe from the Omicron variant.Get Vaccinated
If you have yet to do so, schedule an appointment for yourself and all eligible persons in your home for the COVID vaccine. Currently, anyone ages 5 and up are eligible to receive the vaccine.
Don’t Skip Your Booster
For those that have received full vaccination, you should get a booster if you are over the age of 18 and it has been at least six months past your last dose for Pfizer or Moderna. If you were vaccinated with the J&J COVID vaccine, it should be at least two months after that shot before getting your booster.
Those over the age of 65 will be more at risk for efficacy waning and are encouraged to get a booster shot. If you have previously been infected with COVID, you should discuss with your doctor when to get a booster to help keep you protected from the Omicron variant.
Wear Masks Indoors
Masking indoors in public places is strongly recommended and even required in some parts of the country. If you are not fully vaccinated, a mask should be worn when indoors. The CDC also recommends masks for the vaccinated when using public transit, in healthcare settings, schools, and any place that has many people in tight quarters.
Stay Home if You’re Unwell
While the Omicron variant weighs heavily on everyone’s mind, it’s not the only thing out there that you can catch and spread to others. Staying home when you don’t feel well is the best way to help prevent the spread, even if you are already vaccinated. Should your test reveal that you have COVID, stay home and isolate until you are well again.
Take the Test
COVID testing is still regularly available and encouraged for anyone that exhibits symptoms. Testing is also free so that anyone can have access to finding out their health status. This is especially important if you have traveled to any location that has a high transmission rate. Even if you feel well after your travels, taking a test will give you peace of mind to know you’re not spreading COVID.
By following these tips, everyone can keep safe from the Omicron variant. COVID may find new ways to surprise the world, but the same prevention techniques will work well for this variant and others that will likely follow.
